We kept the best till last
The event that nearly wasn’t, then it was, then it wasn’t, and then it was to become the best meeting of the year. I had better explain.

The master plan suggested that we would use the Castle Combe event as our dropped scores. We subsequently discovered that you have to compete in an event to count it as a dropped score. This meant that we had to go to Castle Combe because if we did not attend there was the slight chance that we could be beaten by one point if certain things happened to others.

Three meetings in three weekends is a tall order, and I, in particular, was struggling. On the way home from Thruxton we decided that we would go to Castle Combe on the Friday and go through the motions of signing on, but not start the race. On Monday, Kenny phoned to say that David was not happy about this, and wanted to go to Castle Combe to try and win the championship with a flourish.

Now, I have been working hard on next year’s project and the last thing I needed was for David to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Bending the car before the meeting would have far reaching consequences and being conservative seemed the best option. Of course I admire the boy for wanting to race. but to win the championship with a flourish had lots of risk. Oh, how I underestimated his determination. Not only did he get his way, but he delivered the goods in one of the best displays of driving that I have ever seen.

Qualifying
Kenny had begged some testing at Castle Combe on the Thursday. I could not make it so he drove all the way to the circuit himself. The weather was atrocious on Thursday but at least it gave David time in the car. Sods law saw the weather improve for the Saturday and so David had to qualify in the dry after never having tested in these conditions. As usual he did well with a second in class.

Race one
David drove brilliantly, hunting down class leader Nagase before passing him in a daring move.

Race two
This was even better, because David came from further back to do the same thing and score another stunning win. David had his moment of glory and to win both races and be crowned British Formula Ford Scholarship Champion was a great achievement and one that is very well deserved. He also won an award for the Spirit of the Championship. Kenny did well too and the result at Castle Combe meant that the car started 20 races and finished 20 races which is a stunning testament to the car preparation skill of Kenny.

I am delighted to have been part of it and I am sure that without me betting David that if he won, I would do the cooking and washing up, the results would not have been so good.

20 races.
20 Finishes, 5 wins, 8 seconds, 3 thirds.

David Brown.
UK Formula Ford Scholarship Champion 2006.
