After many hours of work the M3 project has finally reached the track. Thanks to
the efforts of Brian, Gordon and Jamie, the wiring problems are behind us and the
car is now running properly. We managed to get to Knockhill on the 3rd of June for
a few laps with John behind the wheel to check things out. The car ran well
except for a noise from the rear which will need investigated before we do more
development miles. The opinion in the paddock is that we have made a good job of
the car and so our next task is to get it set up properly, find some speed and get
it ready for more action. No decision has been made yet as to what competitions
we will then do with it but the team will definitely undertake some track days and
test sessions when available.
Whilst at Knockhill we got an MSA scrutineer
to give the car the once over and his impression was that we should have no
problems getting a rally log book if we decide to go that way. The car would make
an excellent tarmac car and with Scotland having the best tarmac rallies in the
country, The Tour of Mull and the Jim Clark memorial rally, it would make sense to
use it in these competitions. Graham is unsure if he can do it justice but no
decision will be made until he gets a few miles under his belt.
Here is a
brief specification of the car:
1989 BMW E30 M3
David Iles Engine using 2.5 Turner conversion with EVO cams and Motec management. 240 bhp.
R&D Gertrac gearbox.
R&D 4.25 diff with plate LSD.
Custom Cages BMW Motorsport weld in cage.
Sparco FIA approved seats.
Sabelt FIA approved 6 point belts.
4Kg plumbed in fire system.
Bilstein dampers.
AP brakes.
Dulop tyres.
Pagid pads.
BBS wheels.
After the team have given the car a good check we can get on with the business of
sorting out spring rates, damper settings and brake bias. Once theses things are
done I am sure the car will give us lots of enjoyment, there is little to rival
the E30 M3 for road holding, good handling and with the S14 engine on full song,
the right noise.
