The phrase, "It seemed like a good idea at the time." could have
been coined for this project. It was purchased as a road car in January 2004 to be
stripped and converted into a tarmac rally / track day car. As is usual with cars
of this vintage, the shell seemed to be in good condition until the underseal was
scraped off, revealing a bit more rot and a lot more work for Graham than had been
anticipated.
Preparation of the shell, including the fitting of a roll cage, continued through
2004, and now that it is painted the car looks fantastic. All the major mechanical
parts are now fitted, and now it is "... just the wiring!" to be completed.
But "... just the wiring!" is proving to be quite a task. Much of the
standard BMW wiring is redundant, and there is an all-new engine management system
and an electronic instrument panel to be integrated into the system. A master
cut-off switch will also have to be fitted. However, Rotor racing has never been
beaten yet, and the newly rebuilt 2.5 litre engine will be
making a lot of noise before long.
